Why Do Concerts in Different Regions Use Different Crowd Lighting Products?

LED wristbands, LED glow sticks

Crowd lighting is now a huge element of concerts and music festivals. One of the most striking differences in crowd lighting at events and festivals across the globe is crowd lighting preference. Most western concerts use LED wristbands which can be controlled remotely by the event organizer. While in Asia, concerts in Japan, Korea, China, and others still prefer the use of LED glow sticks as their lighting product.

Why do these two Regional differences exist in terms of consumer preference?

The main reason is that the crowd lighting product impacts the culture of the concerts, the audience behaviour, and the visual style of the concert itself.
Large stadium concerts in Europe and North America are all about creating a full sensory experience for the crowd and putting on a massive visual display. LED wristbands add another layer to this full-sensory experience for concert goers by providing a smooth evenly-distributed light source to the entire crowd. When worn on the wrist, it creates a very clean and synchronized effect that is beautifully seen from above on camera.
Artists like Coldplay popularized the use of LED wristbands to create entire stadiums full of light. Today, these wristbands have become common throughout Western markets at music festivals, sporting events, and large arena concerts.

Concert culture in Asia-Pacific regions is much more interactive than in other parts of the world and fans are typically very involved in the fan experience. The rhythmic movement of the light is created by fans waving their glow sticks in time with the music at events.
For several years, glow sticks have played an integral roll in idol culture among fans from Japan or South Korea.
Another way to look at glow sticks is the way fans use a certain colour as a way to support individual members of an idol group, while at the same time, they use coordinated glow stick movement to produce part of the performance itself.

When you compare LED glow sticks and Wristbands, you see that the former produces more visual energy and movement. Consequently, LED glow sticks generate dynamic energy within large crowds at concert venues and are therefore suitable for worship related activities at pop concerts due to the high levels of enthusiasm and excitement exhibited by worshipers.
Using glow sticks or wristbands during concerts has different levels of audience participation; accordingly, one would be considered more passive/cinematic while another would be more active/interactive.

For example, an LED wristband would be considered passive/cinematic in that the production team has full control over how the lights appear in large-scale lighting visualizations. Beyond activating their LED wristbands when they arrive at the venue, fans have no way to contribute to or enhance an active lighting display during the concert. Conversely, glow sticks offer fans an active/interactive method of participating in the lighting displays and engaging with other fans. They offer fans greater agency to wave, raise, conduct, etc. and create a more personal and emotional connection with the music during the concert.

Therefore, neither product is better than the other, just different ways to experience a concert.
As the global concert industry evolves technologically, multiple events are now using both technologies to provide immersive crowd lighting with the interactivity of the fans. In the future, crowd lighting may become even more artistic as concerts transform fans into essentially being part of the concert show.
